Learning to read and write.
Before jumping into the grammar and learning any words, the most important thing is to learn to read!
Learning the alphabet or 한글 (Hangeul) helps you get away from typing korean in the english alphabet (romanization) which i find makes things more complicated. For example i find it much easier to read 괜찮아 rather than Gwaenchana.
The Korean alphabet is fairly easy to remember. It's a very intuitive and well designed alphabet. It should take about a week to be able to read and write depending on how much time you spend studying.

Typing Korean on your computer
After you've learnt how to read the alphabet the next step is writing! or typing to be more precise.
Each symbol is represented by a key on the keyboard. The problem is that we don't have keyboards like the ones in and have to memorise the position of each symbol on the keyboard. This can be a bit frustrating at first but with practice you will be able to type as fast as you can in English!
You could try sticking pieces of paper on each key and writing the symbols out, or buy a Korean keyboard (^o^)
To form a letter you must combine the symbols in the picture above.
For example, if take the ㅇ symbol, and place it infront of ㅏ you get 아 which is pronounced Ah.
Swap the ㅇ for ㅁ, and you get 마 which is pronounced Ma. Simple right?
Let's take the word cat, 고양이 (Ko-yang-i) It's made up of ㄱ + ㅗ, ㅇ+ㅑ+ㅇ, ㅇ+ㅣ
Have a go at typing it yourself!
To type ㅆ ㄸ ㄲ ㅃ ㅒ ㅖ you must hold down shift and then press the corresponding key.
Letters must be written from left to right, top to bottom.
For example, to write 괜 you would have to input the symbols in this order:
ㄱ ㅗ ㅐ ㄴ = 괜
